About Us
Who We Are
The Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA) is a Malaysian civil society organisation working to secure truth, justice and accountability for the death of Teoh Beng Hock.
Our work extends beyond Beng Hock’s case to the wider problems of torture, deaths in custody and abuse of power. We advocate for legal and institutional reform, support affected families, promote human rights education and work to strengthen public accountability in Malaysia.
TBH-ADA grew out of the movement formed after Beng Hock’s death in 2009 and remains committed to ensuring that his case leads to lasting change.
TBH-ADA operates under the registered name Persatuan Perkembangan Demokrasi Malaysia, formerly known as Persatuan Pendidikan Demokrasi Malaysia. The organisation is registered with the Registrar of Societies Malaysia under section 7 of the Societies Act 1966. Registration number: PPM-010-10-19012015.

Our History
TBH-ADA traces its roots to Malaysians for Beng Hock, a civil society movement formed following Teoh Beng Hock’s death. The movement brought together his family, civil society organisations and members of the public in a sustained campaign for truth and accountability.
Over the following years, the movement organised public campaigns, forums, exhibitions and human rights education, while expanding its advocacy to address torture and deaths in custody more broadly.
2009
A movement begins
Following Beng Hock’s death, his family and civil society allies began organising for truth and accountability. Malaysians for Beng Hock later mobilised public support, including a nationwide petition that collected approximately 100,000 signatures.
2014
From movement to organisation
A permanent organisation was established to sustain the campaign for justice and expand the work on torture, deaths in custody, human rights education and institutional accountability. It was initially known as the Teoh Beng Hock Trust for Democracy.
2023
Becoming TBH-ADA
The organisation adopted its current public name, the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA). Beng Hock’s case remains at the heart of our work, while his legacy drives our wider efforts for human rights and institutional accountability.
